Combining the aesthetic Scandinavian traditions with sheer opulence and decadence, Danish-born, London-based Jan Bertelsen launched his ‘Banned Collection’ in Spring 2001. In the early days of Jan’s design career, he faced many challenges. For example, he was banned to show his collection at Graduate Fashion Week in London, where he stood-up for the right to express himself through Couture, which resulted in him being the first student to be ‘kicked’ out of Graduate Fashion week – a true ‘Couture Rebel with a Luxurious Twist’.
Jan’s first creations focused on understated and elegant silhouettes with rich details, couture evening dresses in sumptuous silks and furs and exquisite embroideries by HM embroiderers. Jan then expanded into his men’s underwear line, “Quadrigrae Zeus”, in Winter 2005, and unveiled his first men's underwear "Male Haute Couture Underwear" collection at the Swarovski Ultra Lingerie show in Paris.
Key features of Jan’s work – simple silhouettes, but with extravagant detailing in form of embroidery and Swarovski crystal and metal. His designs take roots in a multitude of diverse cultures all refined and perfected into comfortable yet sophisticated designs and choice of sensual materials. Jan is influenced by a range of tradition and cultures. His family history goes back four generations in fashion and expansive cultural experience. Jan spent his childhood in Denmark, but travelled extensively and was fortunate to be exposed to a multitude of different cultures. In his late teens and early twenties, Jan studied in the UK, Switzerland, Australia, Austria, France and Germany. Jan also had the great privilege of working with people like Bruce Oldfield, Couturier to Princess Diana and Jean Charles de Castlebajac. The combination of education and experience with inspiring designers, the diversity could not have been better suited and as a result, Jan’s signature styles are easily suited to a variety of occasions and tastes.
From Jan’s original inspiration of the opulence and decadence married with simple silhouettes to the Parisian Haute Couture Lingerie catwalk pieces, all of his impeccably crafted designs feature sleek, effortless shapes fused with sumptuous, tactile Swarovski elements.
